COURSE DESCRIPTION


FCS 112Fundamentals of Apparel Design and Assembly. 3 hrs.
 Construction techniques and processes used to develop and assemble garments. Analysis of apparel construction related to materials, equipment, cost, quality, end use and customer needs.

FCS 160 Overview of the Fashion Industry. 3 hrs.
 Development, production and distribution of apparel and textile merchandise. Focus on trends in operations, including retail markets, fashion design, technology, raw materials, and distribution and selling.

FCS 201Family and Consumer Sciences Profession and Careers. 1 hrs.
 Philosophical and historical development of the Family and Consumer Sciences, and professional roles in settings, e.g. business, industry, and extension. Integrative focus for disciplines and areas of specialization.

FCS 210Nutrition. 3 hrs.
 The role of nutrition and food intake in the health and well being of the individual and family. Sources of nutrients; nutrient requirements and dietary recommendations; fundamentals of digestion, absorption, transport, function, and metabolism; nutrient deficiency and toxicity.

FCS 212Textiles. 3 hrs.
 Processes and technological advances in the manufacture and care of textiles. Examines the interrelationship among textile fibers, yarns, fabrics, coloring processes, finishes and laundry products that affect selection, use, and care of products.

FCS 215Family Relationships. 3 hrs.
 Dynamics of family interaction; effects of parenthood, sibling and intergenerational relationships on family solidarity.

FCS 240Pattern Making and Apparel Production. 3 hrs.
 An introduction to flat pattern design techniques using computer-aided design, coordination of fabric with design, selection of support materials, and basic understanding of garment assembly operations.

FCS 306Foundations of Professional Practice . 3 hrs.
 Role, objectives, ethics, communication strategies and practices for leading and educating families and consumers.

FCS 311Advanced Apparel Pattern Making. 3 hrs.
 Experiment with methods of pattern making including draping using computer-aided design software. Focus on analysis of fit and problem solving.

FCS 314Dress and Culture. 3 hrs.
 Examination of meanings and functions of dress in complex social contexts, with particular reference to cross-cultural, historical, and contemporary settings.

FCS 349Apparel Product Quality Analysis. 3 hrs.
 Analysis and evaluation of textile materials and final products in relation to end use. Performance properties and serviceability testing, product specifications and industrial standards.

FCS 350Administration of Child and Family Services. 3 hrs.
 Basic knowledge, theory, and research are explored for family based services. Administrative topics are presented for these non-profit settings.

FCS 351Housing the Family. 3 hrs.
 Housing as a process and product that meets individual, family, and community needs, and application of design fundamentals to make the best functional and aesthetic use of space.

FCS 354Home Furnishings. 3 hrs.
 Application of art elements and principles of design in selection, arrangement, and use of furnishings and interiors of homes.

FCS 358Family Resource Management. 3 hrs.
 Fundamentals of management concepts and practices within the family framework. Includes theories and principles of organization, decision-making, and the management process, with particular reference to resource management.

FCS 359Fashion Merchandising Process and Procedures. 3 hrs.
 Organization of apparel retail firm, procurement of merchandise for target consumer, planning and managing merchandise assortment; marketing, selling, promotions, and human resources are analyzed.

FCS 363Meal Planning and Preparation. 3 hrs.
 Meal planning, food selection, purchasing and meal preparation to meet nutritional needs of individuals and families. Examine healthy eating patterns and legislation affecting food buying practices.

FCS 379Aesthetics for Living. 3 hrs.
 Application of elements and principles of design, aesthetic concepts, theories, and philosophies in everyday living, including products, the home environment, and promotional commercial displays.

FCS 402Foods of the World. 3 hrs.
 Characteristics and cultural aspects of foods of the world.

FCS 405Quantity Food Production. 3 hrs.
 Basic principles of quantity food selection, preparation and service. Laboratory applications in local food institutions.

FCS 407Foodservice System management. 3 hrs.
 Administration of food service in institutions.

FCS 410Nutrition in Aging. 3 hrs.
 Nutritional needs of the elderly and diseases responding to nutrition therapy. Government food programs for the elderly.

FCS 417Evolution of Fashion. 3 hrs.
 A study of fashion as influenced by historical events, economy, time, place and culture. Design inspirations from the past in contemporary fashion.

FCS 432Parenting. 3 hrs.
 Examination of current challenges, problems, and issues in the field; analysis of effective strategies for parenting.

FCS 444Consumer Education. 3 hrs.
 Analysis of economic factors related to provision of consumer goods and services, investigation of sources of consumer information, and means of providing economic security for families.

FCS 459Fashion Buying. 3 hrs.
 Analysis of the merchandise buying function within different types of retail organizations and structures. Application of principles associated with fashion retail buying, planning, and allocation. (PR: FCS 160, 359, and 471).

FCS 465Child and Family Programs. 3 hrs.
 Theoretical and practical aspects of planning programs to influence the development of effective interventions for promoting the well-being of children and youth in the context of the family.

FCS 471Family and Consumer Sciences Internship. 3 hrs.
 Involves application of coursework – processes, theories, systems – at junior level – in the functional flow of an operation related to student’s area of study. (PR: 15 hours of FCS coursework and permission from major advisor/program coordinator).

FCS 472Family and Consumer Sciences Internship (Capstone). 3 hrs.
 Involves application of coursework – processes, theories, systems – at senior level – in the management of resources within an operation related to student’s area of study. (PR: Permission)

FCS 485-487Independent Study in Family and Consumer Sciences. 1-3 hrs.
 An in-depth study of action-oriented research provided via topic selected from various aspects of the Family and Consumer Sciences profession including priority issues, trends, programmatic innovations, organizational/agencies foci, and other challenges.
