FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES

The department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a bachelor of arts (B.A.) and a master of arts (M.A.) in Family and Consumer Sciences. Students gain a broad knowledge to work in business, education, industry, consumer agencies, extension services, and other human services, for enhancing the well-being of individuals, families and communities. They also gain hands-on experience through internships at various organizations, retail stores, business and government agencies. Graduates may work in areas such as the fashion industry, business, community services, child welfare, healthcare, camp programs, residential support programs, and the hospitality industry (including tourism, hotels, restaurants, and foodservices).

Bachelor of Arts in Family and Consumer Sciences

The Bachelor of Arts in Family and Consumer Sciences degree program consists of three areas of emphasis that prepare students for a career specifically suited to individual interests and goals. The three areas of emphasis are:

A. Family and Environment Studies
The Family and Environment Studies area of emphasis offers courses that develop knowledge and expertise to address issues affecting child development and the family unit. Students gain the foundation for careers to work with children and families in various settings; public health agencies, nutrition, education programs, family life education, and consumer agencies.

B. Retail Merchandising
Retail merchandising area of emphasis includes courses in fashion merchandising, textiles, apparel design and production, and a selection of related business courses. Students attend a guided tour of the fashion industry in New York City or Abroad. Students prepare for careers in business and industry through a broad-based curriculum focused on fashion merchandising and marketing strategies, apparel production processes, business practices, and consumer behavior. Some exciting career opportunities include retail buying, retail management, promotion/merchandise presentation, computer-aided-design, product development, and wholesale marketing.

C. Hospitality Management Hospitality Management area of emphasis is a dual (2+2) degree program. Students with an associate degree in hospitality management enter the Bachelor of Arts in Family and Consumer Sciences at junior level. Graduates are prepared for management careers in a wide variety of hospitality operations including hotels, restaurants, franchise, and corporate settings.

Master of Arts in Family and Consumer Sciences

The Master of Arts degree in Family and Consumer Sciences is designed to advance students’ academic, research and professional competencies in Family and Consumer Sciences. Graduates find employment in areas such as managerial positions, college teaching, and program administration in consumer agencies.

Admission Requirements

B.A. in Family and Consumer Sciences Degree Program:
High school diploma and other Marshall University undergraduate admission requirements.

M.A. in Family and Consumer Sciences Degree Program:
Students must have a bachelor degree in family and consumer sciences or related field, from recognized institutions.
