Poet Marilyn Nelson’s books include Mama’s Promises (1985); the multi-generational family collage, The Homeplace (1990), which won the 1992 Annisfield-Wolf Award and was a finalist for the 1991 National Book Award; and Magnificat (1994). Her New and Selected Poems (1997) won the 1998 Poets’ Prize and was a finalist for the 1997 National Book Award; and Carver: A Life in Poems (2001) was named a Newbery Honor Book, a Coretta Scott King Honor Book, and a finalist for the 2001 National Book Award. For young adult readers, she has also published Fortune’s Bones (2004), as well as a book of sonnets, A Wreath for Emmett Till (2005). In 2002, she became poet laureate of the state of Connecticut.

Nelson will read from her works on Thursday, November 2, at 8:00 p.m., Birke Gallery, Smith Hall. On Friday, November 3, at 2:00 p.m., she will hold an informal discussion about her writing with interested students, faculty, and community members in the Atrium of Drinko Library. Both events are free and open to the public.
