Geography Department Assistantships

The Department of Geography has several assistantships available each semester to help undergraduate and graduate students with tuition and expenses. Two undergraduates each year have the opportunity to earn the Clagg Scholarship which consists of one tuition waver and one stipend of several hundred dollars.

Currently there are five to six assistantship positions available for graduate students. Each of these two assistants receives a tuition waver and a stipend in return for teaching an undergraduate Cultural Geography section, working as a research or teaching assistant, or teaching physical geography lab sections. You can obtain information in the Department Office, Harris Hall 204, or by email to the chairman, Larry Jarrett.

You may qualify for a Marshall University or Federal Work Study assistantship through the Marshall University Student Financial Aid office. Other financial aid is also available via this office.

As an international student, you may qualify for assistance from the Marshall University Center for International Programs.

Internships

Paid and unpaid internships are often arranged between the Geography Department and local employers or government agencies. Students who participate in our internship program gain on-the-job experience which greatly enhances their post-graduation employment opportunities. Many internships develop into full-time paid positions upon graduation.

You may receive 3 hours undergraduate credit (GEO490) or up to 6 hours graduate credit (GEO690) for internships. See the Department Chairman for more details.
