News - Faculty Retirements
- Dr. Richard Bonnett officially retired at the end of
2002 after 35 years of service as a faculty member in the department. He
also served as Departmental Chair from 1977 to 1992. His research
activities focused on Pleistocene drainage changes and deposits along
the ancient Teays and Ohio River Valleys. He was also actively involved
as a private consultant in the region, conducting numerous studies of
environmental problems and acting as expert witness on occasion. Dick
played a key role in developing a blueprint to renovate the Geology
facilities that the department moved into in 1990-1992.
In June of 2002, Dick suddenly developed a cerebral aneurysm underwent
emergency surgery. A series of complications including stroke required
many weeks of hospitalization followed by an extensive period of
rehabilitation. He has made significant progress in his recovery, and
currently resides with his wife Katie in Rome Township, Ohio.

- Dr. Protip Ghosh taught his last course in the spring
of 2004 and will officially retire in August 2004 after
22 years of service at Marshall, including a 3 year stint at Chair from
1995-1998. Dr. Ghosh was successful in coauthoring several National
Science Foundation grant proposals that led to significant upgrades in
instrumentation, including the acquisition of an ICP and SEM. His
research touched on a wide range of topics including iron in mice, lake
sediment geochemistry, and petrology of igneous dikes in Maine and
India. He also did private consulting regarding various environmental
problems in the region.
