Highlights
Students can earn nine hours of academic credit in 5 weeks
by studying Chinese Language/Studies Program at Shanghai International
Studies University (SISU) in Shanghai, China.

The program offers:
- International Trade course (equivalent to Marshall University’s ECN 420/520-I)
- Chinese language courses
- Elective courses in Calligraphy, Shadow Boxing (Tai
ji quan), and Chinese films
- Lectures on Chinese Culture, History, Economy and Education
- Visits to scenic spots and cultural sites of Shanghai,
Suzhou and Hangzhou.
- On-campus accommodation with interaction with Chinese
students and other international students at SISU
A Marshall University program coordinator will
accompany the group and provide supervision, assistance, and
orientation.

Dates and Length
May 26 - June 27, 2008 (5 weeks)
Students enrolled in the program should schedule
to arrive in Shanghai on Friday May 23 or Saturday
May 25, 2008 and return to U.S. after Friday June 27,
2008.

Student ID Card (ITIC) which includes basic travel accident
and sickness insurance and an all-in-one public transportation

Course
Description
-
International Trade
- Equivalent to Economics 420/520 International Trade (International Designation) at Marshall University. Will be taught by Dr. Michael A. Newsome of Marshall University.

Mandarin Chinese courses
- Aims to improve reading, listening, speaking and writing in Chinese. Different level classes are available to meet students’ various levels:
Beginning Level
For those who have never learned Chinese or have only very little Chinese.
Intermediate Level
For those who have mastered basic Chinese expressions and can handle the daily communication in Chinese.
Advanced Level
For those who can carry on discussions on daily topics at normal speed, with proper pronunciation and coherent sentences.

Calligraphy
- Students learn to write Chinese characters with brushes

Shadow boxing (Tai ji quan)
- Students learn to play the slow-speed Chinese traditional
martial arts

Lectures on special topics
- Students attend lectures on various topics, ranging
from Chinese culture, history, education, modern economic
development to ordinary Chinese people's life.

Transferring
Credits
Nine credit hours can be transferred to Marshall
University with the assistance of the Center for International
Programs study abroad coordinator. (Three credit hours in International Trade, three credit hours in Chinese language and three
credit hours in your academic advisor approved course)

- Housing: Students will be housed on-campus, in double
rooms of SISU Guesthouse. The rooms are equipped with central
air-condition, Internet access, close-circuit satellite
TV system and International/Domestic Direct Dial telephone.
Besides, ATM, Ticket Center, Shopping Center, Beauty Salon,
Coffee Bar and Gymnasium are available in the building
- Activities: Chinese host university will arrange cultural
visits to museums and sites in and around Shanghai, two
weekend trips by train to nearby cities, Suzhou, Nanjing and Hangzhou
- Transportation: With Metro station and many public bus
stations right outside of the campus within 5 minutes walking
distance, students will have a fast and convenient transportation
to go anywhere in the city.

Application Deadline and Payment Schedule
- Total program fee: $2,388 (not including airfare)
- The fee includes tuition, housing on campus, all meals,
excursions and weekend trips, visa fee and service, and
an all-in-one public transportation card in Shanghai
A deposit of $388 must accompany the application. Applications are accepted until February 15, 2008. The remainder ($2000) is due by March 31st , 2008.

Pre-departure
Orientation
A pre-departure orientation will be arranged in
April 2008 at Marshall University for the group
going to Shanghai, China. Details about the time, date and location
of the orientation will be announced at a later time.
|
Passport
- Passport application forms and instructions are available
at the Post Office at Virginia Avenue in Huntington.
- Applicants will need an original birth certificate and
two photos to apply for a passport. Please allow at least
six weeks to obtain a passport. See http://www.state.gov/travel for detailed passport information and forms.
- Passport must be obtained and submitted to the program
coordinator by April 15 in order to give
enough time for Chinese visa application

Visa
All students will need to get student visa to China. The
Center for International Program will assist with students'
visa applications in group. To obtain visa in time for May
departure, student must submit his/her passport and 2 passport
size photos by April 15 to the program coordinator.

Insurance
" The program will purchase the International Student
ID Card (ISIC) for all participants. ISIC provides basic sickness
and accident travel insurance through AIG Travel Guard International.

" For more comprehensive medical insurance, please check
your current medical insurance to see if it covers emergency
medical care while overseas. If it does not, please purchase
health insurance with global medical and hospital coverage
for the period of your stay in China.

China Travel
Flight Arrangement and Reservation
Round trip travel arrangements from the U. S.
to Shanghai can be made by China International Travel Service,
CA. Should students wish to get assistance for purchasing plane
tickets to China (to get possible group discount), a travel form must be completed and submitted to the program coordinator soon after the first payment for the program fee is paid. Plane ticket reservations will be made for the students as soon as we receive the completed travel. Plane tickets shall be purchased preferably no later than March 31st, 2008. |
