Graduate Assistant for Academic Initiatives

Marshall University’s Department of Housing and Residence Life seeks outgoing, energetic, and skilled applicants for a Graduate Assistant responsible for providing support to the Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives with strategies, programs, and initiatives to meet the department’s residential curriculum goals. The four broad learning goals of HRL’s residential curriculum include academic engagement, self-discovery, local and global citizenship, and interpersonal development.


Major Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Residential Curriculum Support

  • Provide general assistance to HRL staff in creating and implementing initiatives to meet curriculum goals
  • Assist with maintaining database of residence life curriculum strategies, evaluation, and assessment data
  • Maintain calendar of all residence life activities and opportunities for student learning
  • Assist in creating monthly progress reports on residential curriculum goals
  • Maintain inventory of supplies for programming resource areas

* Academic Initiatives

  • Assist with the development and coordination of academic engagement initiatives
  • Assist in the coordination of Living Learning Communities and the Academic Mentor program
  • Assist in the coordination of the First Year Experience and Sophomore Year Experience programs
  • Co-supervision of undergraduate Academic Mentor staff

* Department Efforts

  • Attend weekly one-on-one meetings with supervisor
  • Serve on the Academic Initiatives/Residential Curriculum Committee

* Other duties as assigned by supervisor


* Completion of Bachelor’s Degree

* At least one year of experience with peer mentoring, working in a residence hall setting, or in academic support

* Enroll (or seeking admittance) in a Marshall University graduate program

* Maintain a 3.0 GPA


The position is a 20 hour a week position and includes a $12.00/hr stipend distributed over ten months. Tuition Waiver to be distributed as follows:
