Mathematics Through Algebra I
An Endorsement and Graduate Certificate Program The Marshall University Graduate College offers a Graduate Certificate Program in Mathematics Through Algebra I that leads to the endorsement by the same name of a general teaching license in West Virginia. The program is designed for teachers who hold a valid general teaching license in an area other than mathematics and who have an interest in expanding their license to this area. Upon completion of the program, participants may be eligible to teach mathematics through Algebra I at the 5-9 or 5-Adult programmatic levels, depending upon previous experience, license, options selected within the program, and the passing of the PRAXIS exam. The Mathematics Through Algebra I Graduate Certificate Program may be used as an area of emphasis in a master’s degree program from Marshall University Graduate College in Elementary or Secondary Education or may be completed as a stand-alone program. The Mathematics Through Algebra I 5-9 program has been accredited by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Students completing Phase I of the program can be eligible to be hired by a county to teach on permit Mathematics Through Algebra I and will be enrolled in a supervised practicum. Students also will be required to take and pass the Praxis II test for license endorsement in West Virginia. Upon completion of all courses and passing the Praxis test, students will be eligible to request the additional endorsement of Mathematics Through Algebra I at levels 5-9, or 5-Adult, depending on placement for the practicum and previous experience and licensure. Students wishing licensure in other states are responsible for ascertaining the relevant requirements and the probability of this program meeting those requirements.
