Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)

 

Master's Program

The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) program functions as a free standing professional development program or will be applicable as an area of emphasis in the master's degree programs in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, or Humanities.

Certification Program

Marshall University’s Graduate School of Education and Professional Development offers an ESL licensure program in an online format. The addition of this endorsement allows an individual holding a valid teaching certificate to add an endorsement to teach ESL in grades K-12.


 

Eligibility for Participation

 
The ESL endorsement is available to teachers holding a valid teaching certification. Participants must:
  • Apply for admission to Marshall University Graduate College;

  • Submit all official transcripts from all undergraduate institutions.


 

The Program

 

The program consists of six graduate level courses (18 credit hours).

 
CISL 550 - Second Language Acquisition. Examines current theories of second language acquisition and their implications for second language teaching and learning.
 

CISL 551 – Linguistics for ESL. Examines major linguistic theories on first and second language acquisition with emphasis on English by non-native students in Pre-K thru twelfth grade.

 

CISL 552 – Intercultural Communication in the ESL Classroom. Focuses on the interrelationship of language and culture and an analysis on world culture.

 

CISL 653 – Methods and Materials: Language Development. Approaches to developing and assessing listening and speaking skills among second language populations at different stages in academic development.

 

CISL 654 – Methods and Materials: Literacy Acquisition. Approaches to developing and assessing  writing and reading skills among second      language populations at different stages in academic development.

 

CISL 655 – Practicum for Teaching ESL. Involves participation in teaching ESL students in a classroom setting – 75 contact hours.
