Leadership Studies

The Leadership Studies program offers a Masters of Arts degree in Leadership Studies with areas of emphasis in Educational Leadership, Justice Leadership, and Leadership Specialist. Additionally the program offers an Educational Specialist in Education degree with an area of emphases in Leadership Studies.  A doctoral program in Education Leadership is also housed within the program and offers an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership with areas of specialization in Public School Administration and Higher Education Administration.

Graduate certificate programs are available in school principalship (requires a previous MA in an education field) and in School Attendance Worker (state licensure program in WV)

Education Leadership Area of Emphasis (MA)

The Leadership Studies degree offers an area of emphasis in Education Leadership including Professional Administrative Certification as a school principal.

Admission Requirements

Each candidate must meet all admission requirements as a degree student.  Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller’s Analogies Test (MAT) must be on file in the Graduate Admissions Office.  A GRE composite score of 800 (Verbal and Quantitative) or a MAT score of 392 is required for program admission.  A student seeking certification as a school principal must have (1) a valid teaching certificate and (2) a minimum of one-year of teaching experience at the time of admission to the program.  All degree students follow a planned program of study and must maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0

Degree Requirements

The school principal emphasis in Leadership Studies is a portfolio-based program which requires a minimum of 39 semester hours.  Courses for degree programs may not be used if they are more than seven years old at the time of graduation.  Students must complete all field-based experiences for courses that are transferred from other institutions or programs.  LS 500 must be taken in the student’s first semester. All degree students follow a planned program of study and must maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0.  Each candidate will present their portfolio at the end of their program of studies.

An 18 hour certification program in school principalship is also available for persons currently holding a masters degree in an education field  This program requires 18semester hours and all admission standards apply.  Contact the Leadership Studies Program for more information.

Candidates seeking principal certification in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky are required to pass the PRAXIS (0410), Educational Leadership and Supervision test.  West Virginia certification also requires the candidate to complete training in evaluation skills through the Center for Professional Development (304) 558-0539.  Persons seeking Ohio certification must complete two 3-hour leadership elective courses in addition to the above.


Justice Leadership Area of Emphasis (MA)

The Leadership Studies degree offers an area of emphasis in Justice Leadership.

Leadership Specialist Area of Emphasis (MA)

This is a highly individualized program for those students wishing to complete the MA degree in Leadership Studies without certification. Through close academic advising, the program is individualized for each student. The program is ideally suited to the needs of students who wish to gain leadership skills and knowledge but do not wish to focus narrowly in one area. The Education Specialist degree in Education (Ed.S.) with an area of emphasis in Leadership Studies is available in two tracks. A track in Higher Education Administration and a track in PK-12 Administration.

The Supervisor of Instruction specialization includes an Ed.S. program and West Virginia Professional Administrative Certification as a Supervisor of Instruction K-12

DOCTORAL PROGRAM (Ed.D.)

Marshall University has been actively involved in a doctoral program in Educational Leadership Studies for over twenty years as a part of a cooperative arrangement with West Virginia University.  Marshall has now assumed responsibility for this program as a Marshall University doctorate in education.  The Ed.D. in Educational Leadership is offered with areas of study in Public School Administration and Higher Education Administration.  Potential applicants may check for updates on the web site at www.marshall.edu/gsepd/edd, by calling the office of the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services at Marshall University in Huntington, or by calling the Office of Doctoral Programs at (304) 746-8949.

 Admission Requirements

Criteria considered for acceptance into the Ed.D. program include a 3.0 overall undergraduate Grade Point Average and 3.5 graduate Grade Point Average, a combined score of at least 1100 on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (Verbal and Quantitative) General Test or at least a 50 on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT), and a strong commitment to a career in educational administration.

Admission Requirements

Students seeking admission to this certification program must meet the same admission requirements as degree seeking students.  Courses taken in this program will also be applicable as an area of emphasis in the Leadership Specialist master’s degree program in Leadership Studies. Students who complete this program are eligible for a Graduate Programs Certificate from Marshall University.

Certification Requirements

Candidates who are not licensed educators must pass the PRAXIS I: Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST).
