Master of Arts in Reading Education

The Master of Arts in Reading Education consists of six foundation courses, four advanced courses, including two practicum experiences and a capstone experience, and two elective courses for a total of 36 credit hours.

Requirements for admission include:

  • Undergraduate grade point average of 2.5;
  • A valid WV teaching certificate;
  • Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test verbal score of 400 or above or a score of 30 on the MAT;
  • Completion of self-evaluation of dispositions;
  • Completion of diagnostic test related to reading knowledge and skills.

If these requirements are not met, then admittance may be granted on a provisional basis.

**At the completion of the program, a comprehensive portfolio evaluation will serve advisors and faculty as the indicator of program completion, although portfolio examinations may be conducted throughout the program for various purposes.  Portfolio evaluation will be based on rubric scoring. A third and
final self-evaluation of dispositions will also be conducted.

*Candidates, with advisor approval, can select courses that support the reading specialist role. The courses can be within the literacy education program (e.g. CIRG 613, CIRG 614), or courses may be from a different program such as curriculum and instruction, counseling, psychology, etc.  Electives may be taken at any point.

 

 

   

Reading Specialist/Literacy Coach 
Professional Development Program

The Professional Development Program in Reading Education consists of five foundation courses and three advanced courses for a total of 24 credit hours.

Requirements for admission include:

  • A valid WV teaching certificate;

Additionally, candidates must hold a master's degree for certification eligibility.

Reading Teacher Certification
An 18-hour Professional
Development Program

 
   
The Certification Program in Reading Education consists of six foundation courses. Candidates must hold an initial general education teaching certification for admission to the program. The grade levels of the Reading Education endorsement will reflect those grade levels that appear on the candidate's initial professional teaching certificate.

CIRG 637: Literacy Assessment - Study and the causes of reading difficulties, diagnostic devices and techniques, and theory related to assessing literacy development through field- based experiences. 3
   
CIRG 653: Literacy Acquisition - A foundation course  that focuses on the processes involved in becoming literate through field-based experiences. 3
   
CI 550: Writing in an Integrated Literacy Framework - Candidates will examine and plan writing instruction within a literacy block through field-based experiences. 3
   
CIRG 622: The Use of Technology for Literacy Instruction - Candidates will examine the impact of technology on literacy development and plan technology-based literacy instruction through field-based experiences.

A relevant baccalaureate degree, as determined by the Reading Program from a regionally accredited college or university is needed for admission to the program.

Certificate Requirements
This may be done either along with a master's degree program or independently.
