Dr. Stan Maynard
is the Executive Director of the June Harless Center and Associate Dean for
the College of Education and Human Services, Marshall University. His
vision and that of Mr. James “Buck” Harless for excellence in education for
all children was the catalyst for the establishment of the Harless Center.
The Harless Center serves rural West Virginia counties and schools with
professional development initiatives for teachers and administrators
including school reform initiatives to create 21st Century Model
Schools which he refers to as “21st Century Gold Medal Schools.
Dr. Maynard in collaboration with Marshall University, Wayne County and
the West Virginia Department of Education established the 21st
Century Harless Model School at Kellogg Elementary in Wayne County. The
Model School is to serve as a research site for the College of Education and
Human Services at Marshall University and serve as a model for replication
around the state and beyond. Dr. Maynard received his Ph.D. from Ohio
University. He has taught in the public schools at all developmental levels
and at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia at middle and high school
levels. His tenure at Marshall University is 28 years . Dr. Maynard also
serves as Pastor of the Church in the Valley in Milton, West Virginia. He
resides in Huntington with his wife, Barbara. His sons, Stan III and Travis
are pursuing careers in medicine and education.
Dr. Barbara Maynard
is the Program Development Director for the June Harless Center and Director
for the Marshall University College of Education and Human Services
Professional Development School Partnership Program. Her responsibilities
include developing and maintaining programs and projects related to the
focus of the Harless Center. Those responsibilities include facilitating
the professional development schools and other schools in becoming 21st
Century Gold Medal Schools and members of the Harless League of Schools;
facilitating the delivery of higher level mathematics and foreign language
to rural counties; facilitating grant writing; and overseeing the financial
resources of the Harless Center. Dr. Maynard received her Ed.D. from West
Virginia University in 1994. She was a classroom teacher at the elementary,
middle and high school levels for ten years in North Carolina, Virginia and
West Virginia. She served as Program Development Director at the Regional
Educational Service Agency, RESA II, for sixteen years facilitating
professional development initiatives in Cabell, Lincoln, Logan, Mason,
Mingo, and Wayne Counties. She resides in Huntington with her husband,
Stan. Her sons, Stan III and Travis are pursuing careers in medicine and
education.
