Miss Holly A. Miles is currently the Elementary Mathematics Specialist at the June Harless Center. In her position, she works primarily with teachers and staff supporting standards-based mathematics curriculum and implementation at the 21st Century Model School. She also coordinates mathematics professional development for teachers and parents across the state. This past summer, Holly served as lead instructional consultant on two projects with elementary teachers in Lincoln and Pendleton Counties. Ms. Miles is also a member of the June Harless Center’s International team that traveled to the Dominican Republic. She is a graduate of Marshall University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education K-6 including a specialization in mathematics 5-9 as well as a masters degree in Literacy Education.

Miss Daniela Perez is from Chile, South America. She is currently the Foreign Language Specialist, Global Studies Coordinator, and Technology Assistant at the June Harless 21st Century Model School. She is a graduate of Marshall University with a Masters degree in Adult and Technical Education with a double minor in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and Interdisciplinary Studies. Miss Perez is also a graduate of Appalachian Bible College with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education K-6. Miss Perez has been involved in teaching projects in Chile, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Paraguay, and Mexico.

Miss Tarabeth Brumfield is currently the Professional Development Coordinator at the June Harless Center.  In her position, she works at the 21st Century Model school as a curriculum support for teachers and staff.  She also schedules virtual field trips and coordinates professional development with schools across the state.  This past summer, Ms. Brumfield was engaged in grant work with rural counties from West Virginia. She has traveled to Long Beach, California to visit Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, a partnership formed through Marshall University and the June Harless Center. She is a graduate of Marshall University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education K-6 including a specialization in early childhood Pre K-K as well as a master’s degree in Literacy Education.

Mrs. Debbie Workman has 33 years of teaching experience in Wayne County and is currently the lead teacher at the June Harless 21st Century Model School at Kellogg Elementary. Mrs. Workman is a part of the WV Reading Cadre and conducts reading professional development around the state.  She is also a member of the June Harless Center’s International team that traveled to the Dominican Republic. Debbie works throughout the summer with Harless grant projects in rural counties of West Virginia. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education K-8 with certifications in Social Studies 1-9 and language Arts 1-9 from Marshall University.


Dr. Harold Blanco is currently the Technology Integration Specialist at the June Harless Center.  Originally from Caracas, Venezuela Dr. Blanco has been a resident of West Virginia since 1982 and a citizen of the United States since 1994.  Dr. Blanco is a graduate of Marshall University with a Master’s degree in Secondary Education and a PhD in Instructional Technology from Ohio University (Athens, OH).  Dr. Blanco has worked as Technology Coordinator for Marshall University, and has taught Instructional Technology to present and future teachers at Marshall University. Dr Blanco provides technical and professional support to the staff and faculty at the June Harless Center, lending his expertise in the field of instructional technology and professional development.  As the center continues to grow, Dr. Blanco will play an important role in the integration of technologies and instruction. Dr. Blanco is a member of the Southern Regional Educational Board (SREB) and several other professional and advocacy organizations.

Steve Beckelhimer is the STEM Science Coordinator at the June Harless Center.  A resident of Milton, West Virginia, Mr. Beckelhimer has taught grades 6-12 since 1978.  He was chair of the science department of Cabell Midland High School from 1994 to January 2008.  Beckelhimer is a graduate of Marshall University and has attended the University of Kentucky, West Virginia University among others.  He is certified to teach biological and general science in grades 5-12 and holds principal certificates K-12.  He is a Mcrosoft Instructor for IC3, MOS, MCAS. At the Harless Center, Beckelhimer provides support and professional development in science and integrating science processes and content into the instructional program. Beckelhimer is an officer in the West Virginia Science Teachers.

Cathy Walker is the Middle School Mathematics Coordinator at the June Harless Center. She is a graduate of Marshall  University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Elementary Education as well as certification in mathematics grades 1-9 and middle school. Prior to her work at Marshall, she was a teacher for thirty-one years in grades two through six in Kanawha County.  During this time, Cathy helped develop hands-on science units that were adopted as the county elementary science curriculum.  As a mentor teacher for Project MERIT, a statewide National Science Foundation initiative promoting standards-based mathematics, she provided professional development in middle school mathematics to in-service and pre-service teachers throughout West Virginia.   She also led a collegial professional learning community and participated in the state’s Lesson Study Project.   Cathy is featured conducting a standards-based mathematics lesson in a professional development video produced and nationally distributed by Education Development Center.  Cathy has presented at the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics annual conferences.   In 2005 Cathy earned National Board Certification in Early Adolescent Mathematics and was WVCTM’s Middle School Teacher of the Year. In 2006 Cathy received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching.

Mr. Allen D. Perry Jr. is the Science Specialist with the 21st Century Model Schools at Kellogg Elementary and Vinson Middle School.  Prior to working with the June Harless Center, Allen taught science at Spring Valley High School where he also served as Faculty Senate President for the 2007-2008 school year.  Mr. Perry received his Bachelor of Science degree from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1996.  He worked as a licensed Funeral Director for 9 years before receiving his Masters Degree in Teaching in 2005 from Marshall University.  Allen holds a West Virginia certification in General Science 5-12.  He is currently a member of the Teacher Leadership Team in the Wayne County School District.

 

Kyra Minichan is the director of community development and public relations for the June Harless 21st Century Model School at Kellogg Elementary.  She is the primary liaison between the school and the community. Her job is to determine the needs of the school, the resources of the community, and develop  plans to integrate the two. She also organizes and schedules parent volunteers. Kyra has a bachelors degree in Communication Disorders from Marshall University, a Masters Degree in Special Education from West Virginia University, and a Masters Degree in Speech Pathology from the University of Tennessee.
