College Transition Workshop

Students Campus FountainWith more than 30 years of service within the Marshall community, the H.E.L.P. Program has provided transitional support to numerous incoming freshmen, helping them learn about the adjustment to college, and equipping them with the necessary skill sets required to be successful in higher education. Though the H.E.L.P. Program specializes in assisting students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD, we have found that those same strategies are both applicable and effective with the general student population, but instructional support in these areas is sparse. While enrolled in the College Transition Workshop, students will engage in direct instruction taught by learning specialists and staff of the H.E.L.P. Program, who combined have over 100 years of experience. Over the five days, students will participate in skill-focused sessions addressing the following areas: reading strategies, study strategies, time management and organizational strategies, memorization strategies, and utilizing technology in higher education. Students will walk away from the week-long workshop with targeted skill sets that will support their academic endeavors, regardless of their intended higher education setting.

The College Transition Workshop will take place July 20th-24th, 2015 at Myers Hall on Marshall’s Huntington campus. The workshop is open to any rising high school junior or senior, or incoming college freshmen. Students do not have to be attending Marshall University in order to participate. Both morning and afternoon sessions are available, but spots are limited. The total cost of the program is $500.00, with a $250.00 non-refundable deposit due at the time of registration. For out-of-town students, living accommodations are the responsibility of the student; however, suggestions can be provided.
