Natural History, Demography, and Distribution of the Eastern Hognose Snake, Heterodon platirhinos, in West Virginia
The Eastern Hognose Snake (Heterodon platirhinos) is a species of special concern class 3 in West Virginia. The current status of H. platirhinos populations within the state is unknown. Over the majority of H. platirhinos northern range the snake is experiencing declines (Michner & Lazell 89). In order for H. platirhinos populations to be managed successfully, the natural history, demography and distribution of this snake need to be analyzed. That is the goal of this study. Distribution work will be performed in areas with large historical populations. Suitable habitat across the state will also be surveyed for new H. platirhinos populations. Natural history studies will be conducted on two populations within Raleigh County. Data that will be collected will include morphometrics, diet, cover utilization, reproductive biology, and behavioral notes. Radio telemetry will be utilized to determine H. platirhinos micro and macro habitat usage as well as movement during the activity season. The result of this research will be a better understanding of the status and natural history of H. platirhinos in West Virginia. Data collected will also greatly improve the management of this species within the state.
