Midland Smooth Softshell

Midland Smooth Softshell (Apalone mutica mutica)

Smooth softshells are very similar in appearance to spiny soft shells but lack the spines or bumps on the front edge of the carapace.

The only known location for this species in West Virginia is in Mason County.  The habitat is generally the same as the spiny softshell and the reproductive biology is also similar.
