AMD Terminology

Acid and Base

The simplest definition of an acid is any substance that dissociates (ionizes) in water to yield a hydronium ion (H3O+). The simplest definition of a base is any substance that dissociates (ionizes) in water to yield a hydroxide ion (OH-) or any substance that reacts with hydronium ions to form water and a new neutral ion.

So, briefly, in water:
Acids make H3O+ or remove OH-.
Bases make OH- or remove H3O+.
