Agarose

A molecule purified from seaweed that is used for the electrophoretic separation of nucleic acids. Agarose is melted with buffer and poured into a mold. The mold has a piece of plastic shaped like a wide toothed comb placed in it before pouring in the hot agarose. Agarose hardens like very firm gelatin as it cools. The comb is removed, and small rectangular holes (wells) are left in the gel.
