Desk Assistants

Desk Assistants (DA) work in the First Year Residence Halls between 8am and midnight.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Full time Marshall Student
  • Undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.3 or Graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0

  • Compensation and Application process

    Starting pay will be $7.25/ hour. You may obtain an application from the front desk of the Freshman South building or fill out the online Desk Assistant for First Year Residence Halls application. Return your resume and application to the Freshman South building.

    Resident Advisors:

    Resident Advisor (RA) positions offer you an opportunity to work with diverse groups of students and hold a premiere student leadership position on-campus. Working with students affords you the unique chance to make a great impact on assisting students with their transition to college and success in the classroom and community.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Full time Marshall Student
  • Must have attained sophomore status, or be in their second full year of college
  • Undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.3 or Graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0

  • Compensation and Application Process

    Marshall University has 10 residence halls that are managed by separate entities. With one application you can apply to work in the First Year Residence Halls comprised of the majority of the freshman community on campus and/or the Department of housing and Residence Life which houses both freshman and upper class students. Please read the information and job descriptions carefully as there are slight differences associated with compensation and job responsibilities. Once you have completed the application please return it to the front desk of the Housing and Residence Life located in Holderby Hall.

    RA Job Description


    Resident Directors:

    Marshall University's Department of Housing and Residence Life seeks outgoing, energetic, and skilled applicants for a live in, 10-month graduate assistantship responsible for one or two of Marshall's 10 residential buildings. Resident Directors are responsible for the daily administration of the residence hall. Resident Directors supervise six to twenty-two resident advisors and clerical staff.

    Major Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Familiarizing oneself with the students in his/her residence hall and student learning, development, and academic success.
    • Supervising and Mentoring Resident Advisor staff.
    • Counseling and referring students to appropriate campus services.
    • Supervising the social & educational programming efforts of Resident Advisors in his/her area and supporting these programs.
    • Interpreting and enforcing university policies and procedures.
    • Participating in Residence Director duty rotation throughout the year (including weekends and holidays).
    • Available for opening and closing of residence halls at the start and end of each year and during breaks.
    • Assisting with RA Training and RA selection.
    • Enhancing communication between the Housing and Residence Life office and other campus offices.
    • Assisting with the long range planning of the Department of Housing and Residence Life office.
    • Participating in departmental committees and new initiatives.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of Bachelor's Degree
  • One year experience in live in residential management or similar leadership position(s)
  • Enrolled (or seeking admittance) in a Marshall University graduate program
  • Maintaining a 3.0 GPA

  • Compensation

    The position includes $9,500 yearly stipend, partial graduate tuition waiver, furnished on-campus apartment, all utilities, cable and internet, and a meal plan when dining halls are open.

    Student Security

    Student Security (SS) positions are assigned to work a residence hall front desk during evening and weekend shifts, and their main objective is to ensure the safety and security of all residents, staff, visitors, and guests of Marshall University.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.0 or Graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Available to work at least two weekend days a month and 16 hours in a two week period

  • Compensation

    Student Security positions are paid minimum wage per hour, every two weeks
