Certification
  • The PLT program is a 33-credit hour certificate that students can earn from home or library.
  • To earn the certificate, a student must complete 18 hours of library science and 15 hours of general studies courses.


  • Each course is 3 credit hours.

E-Courses
  • Because many of our students are already working in libraries, students are not required to attend classes in a traditional classroom.
  • All course materials and activities for the class are provided online.

Job Outlook
  • Library assistants held about 98,000 jobs in 2000.
  • More than one-half of these workers were employed by local government in public libraries; most of the remaining worked in school libraries.
  • Opportunities for flexible schedules are abundant!

  • Opportunities should be good for persons interested in jobs as library assistants through 2010.
  • Due to changing roles within libraries, library assistants are taking on more responsibility.
  • Because most are employed by public institutions, library assistants are not directly affected by the ups and downs of the business cycle.

    • 94 Professional Directors*
    • 62 Paraprofessional Directors
    • 229 Library Technicians
    • 287 Library Assistants
      • Represents both full and part-time employees
      • Turnover is eminent as the current library workforce in WV is nearing retirement!
