HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University's women's softball team will soon be playing on a new field.

The university's Board of Governors voted to approve the facility on Friday morning during a special meeting.

President Stephen J. Kopp said that the new field was a good move for the university. "We're very excited about it, we believe it's a facility that's going to stand the test of time and help to beautify that area," Kopp said.

The new facility will be located on the 2200 block of Third Avenue, at the old Inferno Bar property. Espresso Mojo, the coffee stand located on the property, will likely relocate.

Dot Hicks Field in the center of campus behind Cam Henderson Center was displaced by the university's construction of a new recreation center and housing units.

In addition to field turf in the grassy areas, the new field also will use a synthetic dirt blend that dries quicker after a rain, something the athletic department asked for specifically, Kopp said.

Also in the plans is a clubhouse at the site that would include locker rooms and an area for the team to meet.

Construction of the facility, which is part of a capitol improvement project initiated earlier this summer, is set to begin in August.

Kopp said there is no estimated cost for the project yet, but one should be available soon.
