Accessing Live Mail

Marshall University is currently working with Microsoft to upgrade the student email system from Live mail to Office 365.  Over the next few days, you may notice some difficulty in accessing your student email.  You will not be able to access your email through the myMU portal but you should continue to be able to access your live mail through your smartphone or other mobile device.  To log in directly to live mail or, If you are having difficulty, you should try the following steps.


  1. Go to https://outlook.com/live.marshall.edu
  2. Log in with your live email address username@live.marshall.edu and your live mail password.  If you do not know your live mail password, please contact the MU IT Service Desk at (304) 696-3200 or via email at itservicedesk@marshall.edu.

Office 365 email

The Office of Information Technology is pleased to report we will begin the migration of the old Live Mail email boxes to the new and improved Office 365 based email system for students.  The migration, which was originally announced at the end of the spring semester, was temporarily postponed due to a timing issue with Microsoft.  The migration will begin today, June 14, 2013, and be completed before Tuesday, June 18, 2013.


Q: Why are we switching to this “Office 365” platform, I was quite happy with Live Mail?

A: Marshall University has been part of the Live Mail program with Microsoft since 2010. Microsoft has since discontinued the Live Mail service and has replaced it with Office 365.


Q: What does this mean for you?

A: Once the migration has happened, you will need to re-enter your password when connecting to email services.  Which will now be your MUNET password (the password you use to log on to computers on campus) not your PIN set to your birthdate.


Q: Will my email address change?

A: No.  Your email address will remain the same – “username@live.marshall.edu”


Q: Will my iPhone, Android or Windows Phone still be able to get my email?

A: Yes, you will still be able to get your email on your phone with minimal changes.


Q: What if my phone will not get my email?  How do I access my email?

A: You will still be able to access your email through myMU

Q: Will I lose all the email messages in my inbox?

A: No, your email will be migrated to the new system.
