Training Policy

Marshall university is committed to offering a quality educational experience to all learners regardless of where they attend classes. To this end Marshall University has adopted a new policy requiring faculty to receive certification from the university indicating that they are sufficiently prepared to teach a video distance learning class prior to the start of class.

Two areas of Certification:
  - Technical Operation of the Classroom
  - Instructional Design and Classroom Management

Certification in Technical Operation of the Classroom is required of all faculty teaching a distance learning class in one of the ITV classrooms or offering workshops to students.

This policy shall be implemented in stages so that undue burden is not placed upon faculty already teaching from a distance learning classroom. All faculty teaching a distance learning class in the 12 months prior to January 1, 2002 shall be grand fathered for the spring 2002 term. Certification of grand fathered faculty can be accomplished through formal training, demonstration of skills, or by review of a portfolio by an ITVS classroom trainer. A series of refresher workshops will be offered throughout the spring and summer for faculty to improve skills and acquire certification. The simplest way for a grand fathered faculty member to achieve the basic technical certification is to demonstrate either in an actual class or in a appointment that the faculty member is capable of operating the classroom equipment. I list of activities required for certification can be found linked off the instructor resources page.

All faculty teaching a distance learning class for the first time in January 2002 will be required to attend formal training in a group setting or one-on-one sessions. All training consists of hands on experience in the actual classroom and a demonstration of the technical skills required to operate the classroom.

The purpose of this policy is to emphasize Marshall University’s commitment to teaching using technologically advanced rooms and provide appropriate training to faculty and staff that will be using these rooms for Marshall University courses, staff training, or other non-teaching activities.  The following rooms require appropriate training before use:  Smith Hall 263, Science 166, Corbly Hall 242, Drinko 349, Drinko 402, MUGC GC 134, MUGC AC 210, and MUGC AC 211.
Faculty and staff members assigned to teach or train in the before mentioned rooms, and student assistants supporting those rooms, are required to attend a group or individual training session prior to use.  Once training is successfully completed the faculty or staff member will be issued signed certificates stating they are an authorized user.
I. Authorized users will abide by institutional policies along with applicable local, state and federal regulations.
II. Authorized users must adhere to the ethical standards governing copyright, software licensing, and intellectual property.
III. The University reserves the right to limit access to users when violations or abuse of equipment have occurred.
IV. The maintenance, operation, and security of distance learning resources require University personnel to monitor the system.
V. Re-certification is required after significant changes to classroom technology.
