

Taking a course that is above or below a student's skill level will generally result in unsuccessful performance and frustration and is not in anyone's best interest. Language courses are based on language skill rather than specific course completion, and there can be significant variation in students' experiences. The Placement Guidelines below identify general placement guidelines, but if there is any doubt, please consult the Department of Modern Languages. Fluent Native Speakers and Heritage Speakers should consult the department for appropriate placement.
Students are also encouraged to take their language requirements as early as possible, and without gaps in the sequence.
Placement tests must be taken no later than the first week of the semester, to allow for class changes as needed. See Placement page for additional details
Little/No foreign language experience: 101 courses are intended for students with NO formal background or very little background. Students should NOT enroll in Spanish 101 if they have prior foreign language study experience, without first consulting the department. Fluent Native Speakers should noe be enrolled in 100 and 200 level courses. Heritage Speakers should consult the department.
Less than 2 years of high school Spanish. Should enroll in 101 or 112, depending on skill level and experience. See Placement , or consult department for placement
High school Spanish/French more than 5 years ago should enroll in 112, depending on level of skill. Consult with your professor or the department if you are uncertain.
2 -3 years of high school Spanish Should enroll in 112: (Advanced First Year Course) 112 is an accelerated, 6 credit coure, intended for students who may need a review of their language skills prior to progressing to the 200 level courses. It covers the same material as SPN101 and 102, but covers both courses in one semester for those with prior experience and language skills.More than 2 -3 years of high school Spanish Please consult the Department of Modern Languages. Placement depends on skill level.
