In Fall 2007, The Department of Modern Languages began offering a Japanese major and minor in the Department of Modern Languages! The Japanese Program at Marshall University is the only program that offers Japanese major in the state of West Virginia. There are at least two Japanese native volunteers who help your study in addition to your instructor in each Japanese class, which provides students with an opportunity to interact with students from Japan in every Japanese class! Also, Japanese instructors can help find conversation partners to practice Japanese and have a personal experience with individuals outside the classroom. A Japanese Study Abroad experience is currently under development.
A minor in Japanese may be earned by presenting 12 hours in the designated language. (100-level courses do not count toward the completion of the required hours for the minor.) One 3-hour course of Japanese culture or literature in translation will be allowed toward the completion of the required hours for the minor in Japanese.
All Liberal arts majors are required to complete 12 credits in one Foreign Language. This requirement can be met by completeing JPN101, JPN102, JPN203, and JPN204. Consult the Japanese Course Listing for Course descriptions. COLA Advising sheets are available here
