U.S. Navy Vice
Admiral Paul D. Butcher (ret.), a
Lundale, West Virginia native and 1953 graduate
of the Journalism School of Marshall University,
was chairman of the Board of Directors of The
American Ship Building Company in Tampa, Florida.
Butcher joined The American Ship Building Company
as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive
Officer in May 1991. His career in the U.S. Navy
began in 1948 as an apprentice seaman. He was
commissioned an ensign upon graduation from
Marshall University, and by his retirement he had
risen to the rank of vice admiral. As a
commanding officer he was known as a
blunt-speaking, demanding workaholic who went to
great lengths to get to know the enlisted people
on his ships. Prior to his retirement from the
United States Navy in 1991, he was Chief of Staff
and Deputy Commander-In-Chief of the U.S.
Transportation Command (TRANSCOM) during
Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He
held a master's degree from George Washington
University and was a graduate of the Naval War
College. In 1988 he was awarded an honorary
doctorate in human letters by Marshall University
and designated in 1989 by his home state as a
Distinguished West Virginian. He died in 1992 in
Tampa, Florida. His survivors include his wife,
Phyllis; three children, Emily Rose Butcher,
Susan King, and Thomas Edward Butcher; two
brothers, William and Perry, one sister,
Marcella O'Lynn; and three grandchildren. |
