Barry L. Burgess, CPA is a partner at Somerville & Company, P.L.L.C., Certified Public Accountants and Consultants in Huntington, West Virginia. Since joining the firm after graduation from Marshall University in 1985, Barry provides a blend of accounting and auditing, tax, financial and business consulting services for a variety of clients. Barry has extensive experience working with closely-held businesses, as well as not-for-profit and governmental entities. His clients operate in a range of industries, including manufacturing, construction, retail, real estate, and many others.
An active Marshall Alumnus and community volunteer, Barry currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Division of Accountancy & Legal Environment in the Lewis College of Business and is a Board Member and Vice President of Developmental Therapy Center. In addition, Barry has been a public speaker and lecturer on accounting and tax-related topics, as well as actively involved in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). He previously served as an Accounting Instructor for the Marshall Community and Technical College (MCTC).
Outside the office, you will find Barry competitively running in local half marathon and 5K races. Barry and his wife, Rena, are proud parents of Blake, Lindsey, and Brooke.

Michael W. Gerber, CPA began his career with Hayflich & Steinberg CPA’s in 1961 while an undergraduate student at Marshall University. After graduating from Marshall in 1963, he became a full-time employee, and in 1970 became a Partner at the firm. Throughout his career, he has worked with many different areas of public accounting including auditing, business consulting, and business and personal taxation. He also has considerable experience in business forecasts, projections, and planning. He retired as a Partner in 2005 but continues to serve the firm in a consulting capacity.
Throughout his time, working at Hayflich & Steinberg, Mr. Gerber has continued to play a prominent role in the community, whether it be related to the public sphere or business. He was the recipient of the West Virginia Society of CPA’s Public Service Award in 2004. Fulfilling his civic duty, he was a member and President of the former Huntington Pediatric Clinic Foundation, Inc. and The Huntington Pediatric Clinic, Inc. Board of Directors. His involvement in this area also extends to his role as a member and past Chairman of the Cabell Huntington Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. Mr. Gerber also served as a Board Member of the United Way of River Cities, helping to provide resources for local charities. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, and member and past President of the Huntington Chapter of the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. Additionally, he has served as an instructor for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, marrying his professional career with his public concern. David D. Hill is a PLLC Member and serves as the Executive Director of Arnett & Foster, P.L.L.C. Prior to his current position, he was a former partner in the Firm's Financial Institutions Services Group, where he still remains an active participant. He has over 29 years of varied auditing, accounting and consulting experience.
Mr. Hill's background includes serving in various capacities on audits of financial institutions and commercial entities. Also, he has provided various advisory services to financial institutions, including assistance with filings required by regulatory agencies in regard to mergers and/or acquisitions, assistance with periodic reporting and holding company regulatory reporting. Mr. Hill has assisted in establishing and organizing internal audit functions for several community banks. He has also provided extensive training assistance to various Bank internal auditors throughout West Virginia. He has served as instructor or lecturer for seminars on financial institution accounting and auditing sponsored by the West Virginia Society of CPA's, the West Virginia Division of Banking, the West Virginia Bar Association and several Bank Boards of Directors and Bank Executive officers.
Mr. Hill has extensive experience with various forensic accounting engagements relating to the financial institutions industry as well as other industries.
Mr. Hill graduated cum laude from West Virginia University in May 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting. Mr. Hill is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants where he currently serves as the President of the Society along with serving on three Committees dealing with careers in accounting initiatives at the State and National level and Firm management. He is also the past Chairman of the “MAP Committee”, "Committee for Cooperation with Financial Institutions,” “Recruiting and Opportunities Project Group” and the “Information Technology Project Group” and is a past president of the Charleston Chapter of the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. He serves on the Division of Accounting Advisory Boards for Marshall University and WV State University and is a frequent speaker to high school and college level groups on careers in accounting. He is an active member of the Association for Accounting Administration and is a Past President of the Ohio Chapter of AAA. Norman serves as Assurance Market Leader focusing in the areas of healthcare, government, insurance and energy. A certified healthcare financial professional, Norman was previously a partner with a Big Four firm, where he worked for 24 years.
Norman’s significant healthcare experience includes financial reporting, acquisition due diligence, corporate compliance, process analysis, A-133 auditing and reporting requirements, and third party reimbursement for various types of healthcare entities including hospitals, nursing homes, physician practices and research organizations.
His governmental experience includes A-133 auditing and reporting requirements for governments of all sizes (states to individual entities) and fund types. Norman serves as a GFOA special review committee member and has assisted various governments in receiving the GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for governmental entities.
Norman also participates as a program leader for area and local education programs including Accounting and Auditing for Providers and National Public Sector and Insurance Current Matters Courses.

Geoff currently serves as President & CEO of First Sentry Bank in Huntington, WV. A native of Huntington, Geoff graduated from Marshall University with a degree in Accounting before going on to West Virginia School of Banking and becoming a Certified Public Accountant in 1990. Geoff has been in the banking business for more than 20 years, beginning his career with First Huntington National Bank (now known as JP Morgan Chase). He is currently a member of the West Virginia Association of Community Bankers, the West Virginia Bankers Association and the WV Society of CPA's. In addition to being a 1st and 10 Resource Council Member, Geoff is a Board Member for the United Way Foundation, Huntington Symphony Orchestra, Boys & Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tri-State. He is married to the former Melinda Blake. They have one son, Sam (10) and two daughters, Madeleine (9) and Natalie (5). He is a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church.
Richard L. Slater is a corporate tax consultant and Managing Member of Dixon Hughes West Virginia. Rick spent 14 years with Ernst & Young and has over 19 years of tax and business consulting experience. He has served in strategic advisory capacities for numerous clients involved in mergers and acquisitions, capital structuring, tax restructuring plans, business incentives and grants, public/private development plans, and state and local taxation.
He has also worked with many companies in entity selection, raising capital, and research and development spending in the area of health sciences and state taxation. Rick is generally thought of as one of the preeminent tax advisors in the market. His work on state and local taxation issues encompasses a myriad of West Virginia and other states’ income and franchise-based assessments. He is involved in many leadership capacities related to economic and tax policies affecting the State of West Virginia. Rick currently serves on the firm’s PEOPLE and National Recruiting Committees.

Susan has audited corporations with complex organizational structures including those with private equity investors, variable interest entity considerations, minority interest considerations and foreign parent or subsidiary implications. Her clients have ranged from entities with a local or regional presence to companies with multiple locations and a national or international presence.
She also has extensive experience working with fund-owned investee companies, including advising management on financial statement S-X compliance requirements. Through her experience with initial public offerings, master limited partnerships and private placement offerings, including providing comfort letters to underwriters, she has provided those fund owned investee companies with the experience needed to assist in the respective exit strategy.
She has experience assisting clients with corporate purchase and sale transactions and performed technical research, including documenting our conclusions and consulting with our national office on accounting and financial reporting implications relating to contingent consideration, purchase price allocation and financial statements including footnote presentation.
