All classes are held on campus in the L.E.A.P. Center located on
the ground floor of Morrow

In addition to classroom study, there are also many out-of-class
assignments and extracurricular activities provided, including:
reading a novel, newspaper or magazine article; researching a topic
in the library; writing a daily journal; studying for quizzes and
exams; taking the TOEFL test; interviewing native English speakers;
participating in host family visits; attending the International
Table; visiting lectures on campus and taking part in cross-cultural
activities, such as speaking at a high school or visiting local
attractions.
Program Highlights
- There is an emphasis on developing academic skills in the advanced
levels to prepare students for the demands of university study.
- Integration of listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary
and grammar within and across courses to improve language acquisition.
- Content and theme-based approaches make learning enjoyable while
also preparing students for academic success.
- Organized activities that involve interaction with members of
the campus and surrounding community make learning "real."
- Communicative activities in the classroom include paired practice,
information gap, and small group discussions to improve communicative
skills and language fluency.
- Teachers are highly experienced; all full-time teachers have
advanced degrees in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages) or comparable qualifications.
- Each student is assigned an advisor (a full-time faculty member)
at the beginning of the semester to assist students with their academic
and personal concerns.
- Student progress is determined by the grades from teachers,
rather than by a standardized proficiency exam during the Fall and
Spring Semester.
- Students who successfully complete the advanced level of the
Fall or Spring L.E.A.P.
Program (Level 109) are waived the TOEFL requirement for admission
to undergraduate and graduate programs at Marshall University.
(Students in the summer program have additional requirements for
advancement.)
