Marshall University LGBT Outreach InformationGay and Lesbian History Month-The month of October was chosen to celebrate LGBT history as well as to commemorate the anniversaries of the first two gay and lesbian marches on Washington. The march held on October 1979 drew over 200,000, and the march held on October 1987 drew over 500,000 with the first public viewing of the NAMES Project AIDS Quilt. African American History Month- In February, the Marshall University LGBT Outreach celebrated African American History Month by recognizing notable African Americans in the LGBT Community. This is a Link to the LGBTO's African American History Month webpage featuring several different LGBT African American resources including the HRC's Online Coming Out Guide for African Americans. Women's History Month- In March 2005, LGBTO celebrated Women's History Month in March. Through out the month there were be several events on campus including the LGBTO's Speaker for the month of March Sile Singleton. We also recognized a different influential female from the LGBT community each week and provided you with some biographical information. We also have a listing of all Women's History Month events that were held. Marshall University Gay Straight Bisexual Alliance- The GSBA fosters a climate of confidentiality for all LGBT and straight students, faculty, and members of our surrounding communities. Growing Up Gay in Appalachia - Dr. Charles Lloyd of the Marshall University Classics Department is currently gathering stories on the topic of "Growing Up Gay in Appalachia". If you are interested in submitting your own story or have questions about his project you may email him at lloydc@marshall.edu Marshall University Women's Center - The Women's Center strives to ensure a campus community in which women and men can live and work together in a mutually respectful and supportive environment where equality, responsibility, and personal empowerment are encouraged and fostered. Following a feminist model of empowerment, the Center works toward fostering, recognizing, and affirming the abilities, accomplishments, and potential of Marshall women. Through a variety of educational programs, culturally-diverse events, resource opportunities, and comprehensive support services, Marshall Women's Center strives to address the needs of women of Marshall and the surrounding community.
