Banned Books

Challenged, but retained in the Bluewater (Ontario, Canada) classrooms despite requests to ban the book because it "includes a number of very explicit and detailed descriptions of sexual encounters, most of them exploitive and violent." Several parents "objected especially to details about the hero's visit to a 'whorehouse' and to a vivid description of the young Canadian soldier's gang rape by fellow soldiers." The book is not cumpulsory and is on the list of books that can be used in the Grade Twelve curriculum, the final year of seconday school in Canada with students being seventeen or eighteen years old.
