Circulation / Collection Access Services
Marshall University has 7 library locations in the system. Each location or department has circulation services for the materials housed there. Please note that under certain circumstances, check out policies can vary due to the nature of the materials special to that location, (i.e. Special Collections, Government Documents, Music, or Health Science). If you have policy questions concerning one of the locations, please consult the circulation desk of that location.

Borrowing Periods
The following borrowing periods are for regular book checkouts. Other items may be restricted depending on the item and/or location.
* NOTE: An MU picture ID is required for all checkouts by all patrons.
Books
- Undergraduate - 3 weeks
- Graduate - 6 weeks
- Graduate Assistant - Semester
- Part-time Faculty/Staff - Semester
- Full-time Faculty/Staff - One year from date of checkout
- Alumni/Community ** - 2 weeks (see below), limit of 10 books
Videos
- 3-day video checkout. (All categories above)
- 6 title limit
- Popular Video/DVD titles are located on 1st floor in Reference area; all other titles are located in regular Drinko Stacks on floors 2 and 3.
- Faculty can request longer checkout times if needed for classroom use.
CDs
- 3-week checkout. (All categories above)

** Alumni/Community patron cards
Members of the community, including non-Marshall and non-resident users, may get library checkout privileges if they join the Library Associates at a charge of $35 per year. Otherwise, the charge is $45.
Alumni who have contributed to the Marshall Annual Fund and present their validated alumni cards at the Circulation desk in the Drinko library will be given borrowing privileges at no extra charge - renewable with alumni validation each year.
Alumni and members of the community should talk to Library staff at any of these locations: Circulation Desk at Drinko Library, Music Library in Smith Hall, or MUGC Library, in order to pay for a card and fill out the necessary forms. Payment is by check only. See the library checkout policy for more information.
To be eligible, persons must be at least 18 years of age and have a photo ID. The card is good for 1 year from the time of purchase, and can be renewed with a payment of $35.

Renewing Items
NOTE: Books may be renewed one time only.
Regular Renewals
Patrons may renew materials in person at the circulation desk of any University Library location. If renewing in person, please bring all items to be renewed.
Online Renewals
Patrons may also renew materials online by going to the online catalog, MILES, and choosing "My Library." Materials may be renewed one time if no fines are owed, the items are not overdue, and have no holds placed on them. If you experience problems with the online renewal, please contact the Circulation Desk at 304-696-2321.

Returning Items
Patrons may return materials at any University Libraries location. However, it is preferred that they be returned to the location from which they were checked out.
Book drops are located outside Drinko, Morrow, and MUGC Libraries for convenience.

Fines, Charges, and Blocks
Payment
Only points or checks can be used to pay library charges at circulation desks, effective March 21, 2007.
The Bursar's Office will handle cash, credit, or debit transactions above $20. The Bursar's Office is located in Old Main 101, and is open from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. The Bursar's Office will also provide change or individuals can make purchases on campus to get change.
Fines for overdue items
$0.25 per day for each item
$1.00 per hour for each hourly reserve item
$1.00 per day for each daily reserve item
$1.00 per day for ILL and E-Z Borrow items
$1.00 per day for each video/DVD
Other charges
Current price plus $25.00 processing fee for lost items.
Damaged items assessed on case-by-case basis.
Blocks
Patrons are blocked when charges reach $20.00.
Once blocked on Banner, fines must be paid in full, no partial payments.
Patron owing over $200.00 (due to fines and/or charges for books) will be notified of this fact by the University. If the account is not cleared within 30 days, the account is then referred to a collection agency.
Lost Paid Items
If a lost paid item is returned a year or more late and/or has been replaced, we will not automatically refund the patron’s money. Refunds will be made at the discretion of the owning library – by the Drinko Desk Manager, Collection Access Librarian, Music Librarian, MUGC, or HSL.

Graduate Assistants Checking Out Items With Faculty IDs
Graduate Assistants working for Faculty members must do the following:
- Bring a letter on departmental letterhead, signed by the supervising professor. The letter should have the professor's name, phone number and e-mail address clearly printed. A new letter should be brought to the library every semester.
- The letter must be presented prior to or at the time books are first checked out.
- The Faculty ID must be presented each time a Graduate Assistant wants to check out items for that Faculty member.

Students Working on Capstone, Thesis, Dissertation or Incomplete
Students working on any of the above who wish to have an extended borrowing period for library books, must do the following:
- Bring a letter on departmental letterhead, signed by the professor supervising the activity, requesting an extended loan period for not more than one semester at a time. The letter should have the professor's name, phone number and e-mail address clearly printed. A new letter should be brought to the library each semester if the capstone/thesis/dissertation lasts longer than a single semester.
- The letter must be presented prior to or at the time books are first checked out. If this is not done, any books checked out will have the normal loan period. Any books checked out prior to this will NOT have the due dates changed. They will have to be checked in and checked out again.

WVU-MU Cooperative Doctoral Students

To borrow materials from Marshall University Libraries and request items via Document Delivery, students must provide a letter, on University letterhead, from their advisor, indicating the program in which they are enrolled and for which semesters.

This letter must be presented to the Circulation Desk at either Drinko Library or the Graduate College Library.

A special card will then be issued and the student will fill out a form to enable him/her to be placed in the Document Delivery system.

Media Services is located on the 2nd floor of the John Deaver Drinko Library. Here you will find materials in microfilm, microfiche, and slide formats, as well as equipment to view and print these materials.

Reserves
Instructions for Placing Materials in Drinko Reserves
Types of Materials
You may place Library or personal materials on Reserve (books, photocopies, videos)
Checkout Policy
You set the checkout policies for the Reserve materials:
- 2 hours
- 2 days
- 7 days
- 14 days
Procedure
- Bring the materials to the Drinko Library Circulation Desk
- Fill out a Reserves form (your name, class name and number, reserve checkout period, etc.)
- At the end of the semester you will be contacted regarding the status of your materials.
Note to faculty: All reserve materials will be removed at the end of each semester unless a new request form is filled out requesting the material be listed for the coming semester.
Copyright
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproduction of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

Copiers
Document Copiers
Most require an MUID with Points or purchased copy card.
Coin copiers are located in Drinko Library Copy Center and in Morrow Library's Government Documents department.Copies are $0.10 per page for black & white copies.
Copies are $0.50 per page for color copies where available.
Microfilm/fiche Printers
Located on 2nd floor in Media Department of Drinko Library and in Government Documents Department of Morrow Library.
Copies are $0.10 per page.
Microfilm/fiche printers accept points/copy cards only.

Study and Team Collaboration Rooms
While there are many places to study in the Drinko Library facility, patrons also have the option of using a private study room or reserving a larger team collaboration room for a larger group.
Study rooms, located on 2nd and 3rd floors, are open and available on a "first come" basis.

Restrictions
- No food or drinks are allowed in facilities. However, there is an exception for drinks that are in spill-proof containers.
- Keep noise, including headphones, down to a reasonable level in the main rooms.
- If your group must discuss a project or assignment, please reserve a team collaboration room. For room policies and/or reservations, see Reservations.
