Emmett G. Galford was born 9/10/1891 and died 2/17/1977 at the age of
86. An excellent history of the family appears in The History of
Pocahontas County 1981, which was written by his daughter Goldie Galford
Beck. This family history is a must read for those truly interested in
history, in this case, dating back to the mid 1700s.
I met Goldie his daughter one beautiful June morning just as the dew was
lifting. My daughter, Lisa and I had engaged her father in conversation
near an old rail fence with a high mountain in the background (see photo).
Goldie visiting from California came from the house to ask what my
business was and when I told her of my interest in interviewing the
“old-timers” who had worked in the woods, she immediately offered
assistance even financial to help me. A later hand written copy of her
letter appears here along with my response. What a fine family and what a
fine man speaking in this interview. Mr. Galford’s grave marker is in the
Cockran Cemetery on the Edray to Woodrow road.
