Reuben Aleshire was born in Loudon County, Virginia, in 1808. He moved to Gallipolis, Oho, as a young man, where he opened R. Aleshire & Co., a business engaged in the flour milling business. He and his sons operated the mill for many years. He was also active in politics, serving on the city council in 1865 and as vice-president from 1881 to 1883.
Most of the letters are to his son, Joseph, who acted for his company, buying and selling wheat and flour in the mid-West during the 1860s.
   He died in 1888.
