               Fort Jefferson Dry Tortugas Fla.
                         February 1st 1870
My Dear Mother
I would have written you before
this but met with accident mashed my right
thumb and have not been able to write for this
past two weeks. therefore I know you will
not censure me for my neglect.
About two days ago I received the box
and everything with the expectation of
one case of tomatoes and one case of
peaches came safely. and I presume
They were broken open by the rough
handling the box received in transit
Everything is elegant. the sausage
especially splendid you know
how very fond I am of sausage
and if you could have seen me
at breakfast yesterday eating
some of that sausage you no doubt
would have thought that I was
again myself at home for in
fact the taste of it really remind-
ed me of those good old days.
