                           Fort Preble Maine
                                Octr. 22nd 1867
Dear Brother.
             I received your letter of the 17th
inst. from Winona this morning was indeed
glad to hear from you and will reply to it
This evening,
           Well Joe I have something to tell you
that I think will surprise you. But after
you have heard The whole story I do not
Think you will be very much aston-
ished, I say after you have heard the
whole story, the truth is it would Take
me a long time to write out the whole
matter. but I will try and give you
enough of the story to enable you
to form a correct idea about the
matter. but I have said enough
by way of introducing the subject
and will now enter upon my
story without talking longer around
