1864, for the final payment of the C.S.S. Alabama
for $9,812.50, drawn on the Treasury of the Confederate States of
America.
The Alabama was built
in 1862 at Birkenhead by
the John Laird & Sons shipyards. During the Civil War it sank 64
merchant ships and one Union warship. It was sunk on June 19, 1864 by the
U.S.S. Kearsarge.
