The village was established in 1910 and the name came from the first letters of Crane and Cole, a Cincinnati lumber company. It was a originally a railroad freight station for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. (Doutt, Logan County, p. 27; Kenny, WV Place Names, p. 190) There were no known fatalities in Craneco from the Buffalo Creek Flood.
