The name was selected by George Jones; the exact significance is not known. (Doutt, Logan County, p. 67)

In 1972 Amherst No. 5 mine and, Lundale No. 1 and No. 2 mines, all three of Amherst Coal Company (Lundale), was located at Lundale. Amherst No. 5 employed 18 persons and produced 50,000 tons annually. Lundale No. 1 mine employed 163 persons and produced 360,000 tons, and No. 2 mine employed 129 persons and 263,000 tons annually (WV Directory of Mines, 1972, sheet 25). There was also the Yolyn No. 2-A mine of the Amherst Coal Company (WV Directory of Mines, 1972, sheet 28).
