Just below the impoundment dams of the Buffalo Creek Coal Company sat Saunders. It was first known as Three Forks, because of the confluence of the Three Forks Branch with Buffalo Creek (See: Map of Logan County, State Road Commission of West Virginia, [1935], Map 23). The village was completely destroyed in the Buffalo Creek Flood, and there were eighteen fatalities in Saunders:
Janice Bailey, 32 years - Mother
Albert O. Hedinger, 34 years - (Preparation Engineer, Buffalo Mining Company tipple)
Norman Lester, 24 years - Husband (Miner)
Opal Lester, 45 years - Mother of Shaon Ann Lester
