This village was named for the Stowe family (Doutt, Logan County, p. 1012) In 1972 the Guyan 4-A G & 4-B mines of the Island Creek Coal Company (Holden) were located at Stowe. These mines employed 122 men and produced 160,000 tones of coal. There was also No. 1 mine of the K & L Coal Company (Matewan), which employed 27 men and produced 81,000 tons of coal annually (WV Directory of Mines, 1972, sheet 26). There were two known fatalities, one missing, in Stowe from the Buffalo Creek Flood:
