 “Lieutenant Low’s superb seamanship and coolness in ‘wearing’ ship from the port tack, without awaiting the commander’s orders, doubtless saved the Alabama from foundering. Had he hesitated five minutes, the manoeuvre would have been impossible of execution, owing to the fury of the wind.”
