  Alcott was one of a number of British born sailors that Semmes recruited for service on the the CSS Alabama. He was a capable and skilled officer, keeping the vessel’s canvas in good repair. He was one of the last to leave the sinking Alabama and was rescued by the Dearhound. He later served on the CSS Shenandoah. At the war’s end he returned to Britain, where he worked in the merchant marine. He died in 1891 in Liverpool.
