These illustrations depict the early stages of the battle as the CSS Alabama and USS Kearsage maneuvered for the best position to fire on each other. The Alabama left Cherboug harbor on June 19, 1864 and engaged the Kearsarge. The Alabama opened the fight with a starboard broadside. Both vessels then circled each other seeking an advantage. |
