THE CONTRACT FOR SHIP No. 290 ![]() |
This is the first page from the Contract Book of John Laird Sons & Company for the construction of ship No. 290, which was christened the CSS Alabama. The contract was made between between Laird’s and Captain James D. Bulloch on August 1, 1861, for ₤47,500 The contract called for an initial payment of ₤29,500, followed by payments of ₤9,500 when the frame was completed, ₤9,500 when the upper and lover deck shelves were in place, ₤9,500 when the vessel was launched, and a final payment of ₤9,500 when the vessel performed satisfactorily. |
