Evans worked as a bar pilot in the Charleston harbor, before he joined the Confederated Navy. Initially, he helped bring blockade runners into the harbor, before being assigned to the CSS Alabama. He had an uncanny knack for identifying the nationality of vessels at a considerable distance, and Capt. Semmes wouldn’t pursue a ship if Evans said it was neutral. After the Civil War he returned to his work as a bar pilot.
