Forward Officers were petty officers. Forward Officers included the vessel’s boatswains, gunners, carpenters, and sailmakers. They might be furnished lockers, but slept in hammocks with enlisted sailors. The Alabama only had one officer in each of these ranks, while larger vessels might have an additional man in each rank. |
