         4th Lieutenant John Low
        C.S. Navy, C.S.S. Alabama

Low, who was born in Great Britain, moved to America, settling in Savannah, Georgia. He first served as the second officer of the CSS Fingal, before joining the CSS Alabama. He was detached from that vessel to command the CSS Tuscaloosa. He was replace by Lieut. Arthur Sinclair. He kept detailed journals, which were used by William S. Hoole to recount Low’s career in Four Years in the Confederate Navy, published in 1964. He returned to England after the war, becoming an influential businessman. He died in 1906.
