Mecaskey (also McCaskey), served in the U.S. Navy as a boatswain before receiving a commission to the same rank in the C.S. Navy in 1861. He served in the CSS Sumter, before joining the CSS Alabama. He was captured after the latter ship sank, and was held a prisoner of war on various ships and finally at Fort Warren until the conflict ended. There is nothing known about his life after the Civil War.
