Officers on both the USS Alabama and the USS Kearsarge submitted reports and maps of the engagement. Lieut. John M. Kell of the Alabama and Surgeon John M. Browne of the Kearsarge wrote accounts published in the Century Magazine Engineer William H. Badlam of the Kearsarge wrote an account that was published in the papers of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion. There is also an anonymous newspaper account by an Alabama sailor, published in July 1864. Evan P. Jones, Captain of the yacht Deerhound, wrote a statement about the rescue of survivors. John Lancaster of the Deerhound wrote a letter giving his story of the rescue. |
