  Smith  was born in Louisiana. He served as Capt. Semmes’ secretary on the CSS Sumter, as well as on the CSS Alabama. When the latter vessel sunk, he returned to England, where he was promoted to Paymaster and assigned to the CSS Shenandoah, serving on that vessel until the war’s end. He became a successful merchant  in St. Louis and New Orleans after the war.
